Born Marie-Louise Thomas, Bumble (a nickname given by her father) was brought up in Jersey around horses. Her mother show jumped to Grade A level and this gave her a huge amount of experience and the ground work to manage and ride horses. Her first introduction to riding was in Jamaica at the ripe old age of 13 months, when her mount decided to show her the countryside at full canter – Bumble was found a little while later, on the ground, laughing!

Her childhood was spent show jumping (for the Jersey team) and draghunting, Principal Boy was her first pony. “I was bought up with horses and the challenge of creating a partnership with another brain that doesn't speak "English" is what drives me.”. Bumble initially thought Show Jumping would be her career, but decided Eventing would be more rewarding “…and more fun, said Mum”.

"Having taken up running my own yard, I could not have got this far without the support of all my owners." Bumble Thomas

Bumble’s training started at the Bartles’ Yorkshire Riding Centre gaining her BHSAI. She then moved to work for the legendary Ruth McMullen in Norfolk for 6 years alongside Pippa Funnell. She started initially as a working pupil and became head girl, and competed a number of Ruth’s horses. “Working at Ruth’s was many years of very hard work, but I could not have got to this level without it. I rode a huge number of horses and really learnt the affect a rider has on the horse. She taught me the true meaning of dedication and the discipline required to be a top level rider.”.

During this time Bumble had a season in Young Riders with Hollywood Blues – her first proper horse - giving Bumble a placing in the young rider section at Osberton 1992 and completing Burghley in 1995. “He was the first horse to take me to four star level and that will always be a very special memory for me.”

Bumble left Ruth’s yard after 6 years to start her own competition yard. Following a tough couple of years riding some difficult horses but having some great experiences, Bumble took on the ride of The Psephologist. “Having seen Branston with Simon Pratley, I always knew he was a class horse with the boldness and braveness across country that would help bring back my belief in myself.”.

“Bumble rides every horse as though it’s her own and gives each one 100%”, Richenda Broad, owner, The Psephologist.

Bumble now runs her own yard in the village of Brill, based at the home of Anne and Trevor Silver. “Having taken up running my own yard, I could never have got this far without the support of all my owners I owe them a huge thank you.". And what is that she enjoys the most, "I have a variety of horses in the yard now, quite a few who are quirky but I relish the challenge of trying to work out what they are thinking. I love getting to understand them. You have to click with the horse and I like to know what is going on in their heads”.

With a strong yard, training from Carl Hester and Sarah Ward for flat and Yogi Breisner for jumping together with sponsorship from Toggi, Poly Jumps and soon Bates Australian Saddles, she has all the ingredients for another incredible year. Her focus now is getting onto the British Team and taking part in the next Olympics.
